In the spring, upon starving to death, the girl eats herself. She enters the mystical land of Awururua inside her body. Her choice allows her to exist both inside and outside of herself. She is the body that digests food and the food that enters the body. She is aware and being awared. She is in between the esophagus and stomach. She is in between life and death. She self-destructs and she comes alive. She is the ouroboros, a ring, a contradiction, a paradox, the truth, the mother, the daughter, the food, the eater…

Awururua is an interactive performance project by Jia-yue Ding, Ruoming Zhao, and Xiyue Liang. The performance combines video art, music, spoken-word, and foodmaking, telling a story of a girl who eats herself upon starving to death under the food shortage of the 0-covid lockdown confinement. As she experiences digestion and integration in the inner mystical land of Awururua, she releases herself into an open tense of "becoming".

This story connects transcendental experience to collective SH lockdown memory through devouring, digesting, and becoming. Awuurua is the sound/movement of digestion, the mumbling of infants, as well as an open channel of circulation, It amplifies the experience of synchronicity and reveals the co-existence of life: the "I" devours “my body” and surrenders to the suffering of near-death; the digestion gradually dissolves the individual forms and expands boundaries to all senses and consensus. As the performance unfolds, the past integrates with the future, moving toward a timeless space of rebirth. "I" return to the present, remembering the collective energy, now infused with independent intent.

"I ate myself," and in this act, suffering is both evoked and liberated.
